For the Love of Tennis: How We Built a Live Scores App Fans Actually Use

· Claire Nicholson

Most tennis fans know the feeling.

A match you care about is on somewhere in the world, and you are stuck refreshing three different tabs, squinting at a scoreboard that lags a game behind, and still not sure who is actually serving.

We kept running into that gap, so we built the thing we wanted to use ourselves: For The Love of Tennis, a live scores and results app that puts the whole tour in one place.

This post is part app announcement, part build story. If you are a fan, you can download For The Love of Tennis. If you are a business owner wondering what it actually takes to ship an app people keep, stick around — this is the honest version.

What the app does

For The Love of Tennis is a companion for tennis fans, not another cluttered stats site. Open it and you get:

  • Live scores and results: follow matches point by point, plus today’s completed play at a glance.
  • Tournaments, draws and player profiles: browse the bracket, see who plays who next, and dig into any player.
  • Your own tennis home: save the players and tournaments you follow and the app builds a personalised feed around them.
  • Match alerts: opt-in push notifications when something happens in a match you care about, so you never miss a comeback.
  • News, analysis and podcasts: read tennis coverage and listen to The Tennis Podcast without leaving the app.

It runs on iPhone and Android, and it is free to download.

Why we built it the way we did

The temptation with a sports app is to show everything — every stat, every feed, every tab. We went the other way. The first question for every screen was simple: does this help a fan follow a match right now, or is it just noise?

That discipline is the same one we bring to client work. An app that does three things brilliantly beats one that does twenty things you have to hunt for. Live scores had to be fast. Following a player had to be one tap. Notifications had to feel useful, never spammy — which is why alerts are opt-in and tied to the players you actually chose.

None of that is glamorous. It is the unglamorous decisions that decide whether an app earns a place on your home screen or gets deleted in a week.

What shipping a real app taught us

Building For The Love of Tennis was a live test of how we work — the same systems and AI-assisted workflow behind HelixScribe, applied to a native product instead of a page of content. A few things stood out:

  • Speed is a feature. Fans forgive a plain screen. They do not forgive a score that arrives late.
  • Personalisation drives retention. The moment someone saves their first player, the app stops being generic and starts being theirs.
  • Notifications are a trust exercise. Get them right and people keep the app; get them wrong and they turn them off — or uninstall.
  • Shipping beats planning. We learned more from the first real users than from any amount of pre-launch spec.

If you are sitting on an app idea and wondering whether it is worth building, this is the honest answer: the hard part is not the code, it is the ruthless focus on what your users actually need. That is exactly the part we help with.

Try it, then tell us what to build next

If you love tennis, download the app and set up your players before the next big week. If a score ever looks wrong, or you have an idea that would make it better, we genuinely want to hear it — that feedback loop is how the app keeps improving.

And if you are a business owner who just read a build story and thought, “I want something like this for my product,” that is a conversation we would love to have.

One app, two invitations

For tennis fans, For The Love of Tennis is a faster, simpler way to follow the matches, players and tournaments you care about.

For businesses, it is also a useful example of what good digital product work looks like: clear priorities, user-centred decisions, careful use of data, and enough discipline to leave out the features that would only get in the way.
